1909

Rohto Eye Drops are born.

Following the end of the Russo-Japanese War, the demand for eye drops increased due to an epidemic of trachoma, an eye disease.

Rohto Pharmaceutical's first eye drops, "Rohto Eye Drops," were launched in 1909 (Meiji 42), more than 100 years ago.
It was prescribed by Dr. Toyotaro Inoue, a leading authority in ophthalmology at the time, and the product name was taken from the name of his mentor, Dr. Rothmund.

1964

V. Rohto is born.

Eye drops are shifting from being "medicinal drugs" to "health supplements."
This would shape the trends in the post-war eye drop market.

As Japan experienced rapid economic growth after the war, people's lives changed, and the market for eye drops shifted from "therapeutic drugs" primarily containing antibiotics to "health-promoting medicines" that protect people's health.
Therefore, we focused on "aspartate," which was attracting attention as an active ingredient in nutritional supplements at the time. We were the first in Japan to demonstrate its effect of activating eye cells, and it was also confirmed to contribute to increased metabolism of the ciliary muscle, so we quickly incorporated it into our product.

1991

New V-Rohto Plus is born

From the Showa era to the Heisei era, eye strain increased dramatically due to the widespread use of word processors and video games.

The formula has been strengthened with the addition of panthenol, which is highly effective against eye strain. Long-term clinical trials using eye drops have confirmed its effect in reducing eye fatigue.

The effectiveness against eye strain was demonstrated in clinical trials using a "neostigmine methylsulfate + PAB formula."

*PAB formula refers to a formula containing panthenol 0.1%, potassium L-aspartate 1%, and vitamin B6 0.05%.

2001

New V Rohto EX is born

Computers and mobile phones are part of our daily lives.
There has been a sharp increase in the number of people complaining of eye strain caused by dry eyes.

The number of people complaining of physical fatigue symptoms from computer work is increasing. In response, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has established "New VDT Work Guidelines" and is beginning to thoroughly address the growing number of VDT workers. In terms of eye symptoms, there has been a sharp increase not only in fatigue but also in dry eyes.
Focusing on eye fatigue caused by dryness, this product now contains "sodium chondroitin sulfate," which protects the eyes from dryness.

*VDT work refers to work performed using VDTs (Visual Display Terminals) consisting of displays, etc.

2008

Rohto V11 is born.
