Methods to suppress hives
In cases of allergic urticaria, symptoms usually subside naturally simply by avoiding allergens, triggers, and aggravating factors. If the cause cannot be identified and the symptoms persist, treatment will involve medication.
First, there are antihistamines to suppress the effects of histamine, which is the cause of itching. However, as explained in (1) the cause and mechanism of hives, histamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain that controls wakefulness, memory, and appetite suppression, so taking it can cause side effects such as drowsiness, lethargy, and increased appetite. For this reason, people who drive or do dangerous work must be careful when taking it. Antihistamines are classified into first-generation and second-generation drugs. First-generation drugs have a shorter duration of effect and act more easily on the brain, while second-generation drugs have a longer duration of effect and act less easily on the brain compared to first-generation drugs. In addition, if antihistamines are ineffective, H2 blockers, which suppress stomach acid, can be used to enhance the effect of antihistamines.
Other medications used to treat urticaria include topical creams containing steroids and antihistamines, and anti-leukotriene drugs, which are prescribed according to the symptoms. In cases of allergic urticaria where the cause has been identified, treatment may involve immunotherapy using specific allergens. There is also a treatment method that involves subcutaneously injecting antibodies against the entire protein called IgE, which is the cause of urticaria, to suppress the allergic reaction of IgE.
