Pharmaceutical companies' initiatives

As sunscreens improve, people will be able to coexist with the sun more effectively.

How can we protect everyone's skin from invisible ultraviolet rays?
We spoke to employees who have been involved in the development of this sunscreen for many years, asking them about their commitment to quality and their future goals as a "sunscreen made by a pharmaceutical company."

Respondent: Kanehisa Maezawa, Product Development Department, Research and Development Headquarters (at the time of the interview)

Rohto Pharmaceutical's efforts to protect against UV rays, Part 1
What you need in sunscreen to protect your skin health

To maintain healthy skin, it is essential to protect it from ultraviolet (UV) rays. In developing sunscreens, we conduct comprehensive research into the positive and negative effects that sunlight, including UV rays and visible light, has on skin and cells, and we constantly consider how to protect against strong UV rays and maintain that effect.
Furthermore, since sunscreen is applied directly to the skin, it is important to consider its safety and to create a formulation that is less affected by temperature and humidity.

A commitment to quality that only a pharmaceutical company can offer.

As a pharmaceutical company, we want to create a sunscreen that lives up to the name of a pharmaceutical company.
Therefore, we believe it is necessary to carefully consider safety and stability. When developing products for sensitive skin, even more careful consideration is required, which may take longer than usual.
Furthermore, the production and quality control systems are almost identical to those used for pharmaceuticals.

The power of on-site staff to quickly respond to customer needs.

While we conduct thorough testing and quality control, we prioritize speed in product planning and development. This is because sunscreens are constantly evolving, and customer needs are changing moment by moment. On the ground, the marketing department and our development department communicate closely at the individual staff level, generating a stream of ideas to meet those needs. The source of these ideas is the knowledge and experience of each development staff member.
Because Rohto Pharmaceutical handles a wide variety of products, including eye care and skin care, it gathers diverse information on the raw materials used in formulations, and its development staff have experience in development across multiple fields. Conversations like, "For this need, that technology might be useful," or "What about this material?" are commonplace.

Loved by many customers, and now to the world

As a result of developing products that meet customer needs in this way, Rohto Pharmaceutical's sunscreens are loved by many customers. In 2012, cumulative sales of the "Sunplay" series exceeded 100 million units.
The "Skin Aqua" series is a leading example of gel-type skincare products. "Orezo Mild Defense," which utilizes the industry's first microcapsule technology, has been well-received for its pleasant feel and high level of protection.
Furthermore, Obagi Active Base UV Emulsion, which transforms UV rays into radiance, has received a great response from beauty industry professionals as a completely new concept in cosmetics. Rohto Pharmaceutical's sunscreens are also gaining popularity overseas. Based in Vietnam, Indonesia, and China, we are currently launching the Sunplay series and other products in the Asian region.

What Rohto Pharmaceutical's sunscreen, which has continued to evolve, aims for next.

Until recently, sunscreens were known for their unpleasant texture and harshness on the skin. While continuous development has led to significant advancements in sunscreen technology, there's still room for improvement. This sometimes involves focusing on light rays other than ultraviolet rays present in sunlight.
Rohto Pharmaceutical will continue to create sunscreens that protect your skin and help you manage UV rays and sunlight effectively, rather than simply avoiding them.
