Suffering from dry eyes? You may have dry spots in your eyes!

The eye retains moisture with tears, oil layer, liquid layer, cornea, dry spots! Diagram of an eye with a dry cornea and dry spots.

What are dry spots?

Normally, the surface of the eye is covered with tears. However, due to aging or reduced blinking caused by computer work, tears can become insufficient, leading to the development of "dry spots." Because the delicate cornea is exposed, the eyes become dry and more susceptible to strain.

When you open and close your eyelids, friction occurs between the inside of the eyelid and the exposed cornea, further damaging the cornea. This can lead to a gritty feeling in the eyes and make them more prone to dryness.

Development secrets

Dryaid Episode 01 Product Development Department Ueno Development Research Center Han Gil-nam

Dry eye (dry eyes) is on the rise in Japan.
Develop Japan's first high-viscosity eye drops.

With the widespread use of digital devices, the problem of dry eyes has increased dramatically. In particular, for severe cases, conventional eye drops have become insufficient.
Is there a way to keep the eyes even more moisturized? This is where the idea of high-viscosity eye drops came from. By giving the eye drops a "thick" consistency, it "suppresses tear evaporation and keeps the replenished moisture in place for a long time." Han from the Research and Development Headquarters began developing "Dry Aid" two years before its release.

Development began with a viscosity 100 times higher.
Find the best viscosity.

If eye drops are too viscous, they can cause the eyelids to stick together when applied, making them uncomfortable to use. Lowering the viscosity improves the feel, but it reduces their ability to retain tears. Through repeated trial and error, we pursued the perfect balance between effectiveness and usability, and finally arrived at the ideal drop. That ideal viscosity is approximately 60 times higher.
However, there was one major obstacle: the production line. It's extremely difficult to consistently produce eye drops with a viscosity 60 times greater than normal.

How to incorporate 60 times the viscosity into a manufacturing line
Shall I put it on?
We conducted repeated tests on actual devices.

The viscosity of eye drops affects the "filtration sterilization" process on the manufacturing line. Quality Assurance's Mokuji explains, "High-viscosity formulations are difficult to pass through the filtration filter. This means it takes longer, and clogging can occur. This makes stable production impossible, and the product inevitably becomes expensive." To overcome this hurdle, Han and Mokuji conducted actual machine tests. They left the laboratory and searched for a method on the actual manufacturing line. There was no precedent for this. However, this was the only way to verify if it was truly possible. They continued this night after night, from around 8 pm when the manufacturing line was free until around 2 am.
It took a year and a half from the start of development before we could even begin production. And when the product first went onto the actual production line, every single project member stayed there all day. This, too, was unprecedented.
