When we researched the cause of this odor, we found that it was related to ultraviolet scattering agents.

Conventional UV scattering agents reflect ultraviolet rays, preventing them from reaching the skin, but in the process, they generate reactive oxygen species.
This reactive oxygen species oxidizes sebum and other substances on the skin's surface, which is what produces that distinctive "sunscreen smell."
Reactive oxygen species have recently been frequently featured in the media as something related to aging, so many people have probably heard this name before.
In fact, reactive oxygen species have a very strong ability to oxidize substances, or to put it simply, to rust them, which is why they were causing that unpleasant odor.

And that's how we arrived at Rohto's unique high-density coating technology.

After much trial and error, we discovered that by applying a high-density coating of UV scattering agent to thoroughly cover the surface, we could suppress the generation of reactive oxygen species even when exposed to ultraviolet light.
Since it involves coating each and every particle of ultra-fine powder, which is only 20 to 30 nanometers in size, the path to practical application was difficult, but finally, in 2004, we completed a product that suppressed the "sunscreen smell."
