Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. presented this at the 51st Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Taste and Smell Research in 2017.

Test method: The sweet scent in body odor was analyzed and identified using HSS-GC/MS, and it was found to be lactone C10/lactone C11. The lactone C10/lactone C11 concentrations in body odor were measured in each age group, and the sum of these values was graphed.

Test method: After washing with a lactone-containing fragrance preparation for 30 seconds,
Each hair strand was rinsed in 40°C water for 30 seconds and dried, then each odor sample was applied to it, and seven evaluators evaluated the results.
Evaluation criteria: Masking tests were performed with scores of 0, 1, 2, and 3, and matching tests were performed with scores of -1, 0, 1, and 2, after which the values were adjusted to match the masking scores.

In our youth, antioxidants in the body prevent cell oxidation, but after the age of 40, this antioxidant capacity weakens, making cells more susceptible to oxidation by reactive oxygen species. This is thought to trigger an increase in reactive oxygen species, which intensifies age-related body odor.

In particular, 2-nonenal, which is a cause of age-related body odor, easily blends with sebum and is difficult to remove with water alone, making it difficult to remove with regular showers or soap. The same causes can lead to changes in women's body odor as well as men's.
